Fresh Explosions, Gunfire Near Venezuela’s Presidential Palace After U.S. Capture of Maduro

By The South Asia Times

CARACAS - Gunfire and a series of explosions were reported on early Tuesday in the vicinity of Venezuela’s presidential palace, deepening uncertainty following the dramatic U.S. operation that led to the capture and abducted President Nicolás Maduro over the weekend.

Videos circulating on social media — not independently verified — appeared to show armed men in combat gear and military vehicles surrounding Miraflores Palace in central Caracas.

Footage showed security forces deployed along major streets, while residents were seen taking cover amid the chaos.

The sudden exchange of fire sparked fears of a possible coup or internal power struggle, although early reports suggested the situation was brought under control and nearby government buildings were evacuated as a precaution.

Local media said the incident unfolded around 8 p.m. local time (0000 GMT), after unidentified drones were reportedly spotted hovering near the palace, adding to the confusion. Authorities have not yet issued a formal briefing on the cause of the incident.

No casualties or damage have been officially confirmed.

The unrest comes just days after the United States announced a military operation in Venezuela on Saturday that resulted the abduction of Maduro and his wife, First Lady Cilia Flores by US. Hours before Monday’s violence, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez was sworn in as acting president, marking a dramatic shift in the country’s leadership and intensifying fears of further instability.
