By The South Asia Times

Kuala Lumpur – A strong 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck deep beneath northern Malaysia on Saturday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake was recorded at 16:57:46 UTC, with its epicenter located about 55 kilometers north-northwest of Kota Belud in the state of Sabah.

The tremor occurred at a depth of 620 kilometers below the Earth’s surface, classifying it as a deep-focus earthquake.

Due to its significant depth, the shaking at ground level is typically reduced compared to shallow earthquakes of similar magnitude.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage.

Malaysia’s meteorological authorities are monitoring the situation, and further updates are expected as assessments continue.
