China urges US to unfreezes Afghanistan assets amid humanitarian crisis

By The South Asia Times report

BEIJING (TSAT) - China on Tuesday urged the United States to release the frozen assets of the Afghan government as the country gripped by humanitarian crisis, state-run media said.

During his regular press briefing, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said that his country’s people sympathise with Afghan nation.

"We urge the U.S. side to deeply reflect on its mistakes, shoulder its due international responsibilities and lift its asset freeze and unilateral sanctions against Afghanistan as soon as possible," Xinhua quoted Wang as saying.

He added that US forces withdrew from Afghanistan and its 20 year presence in Kabul has destroyed the country while now its sanctions further aggravated the situation.

Wang comments came after the acting Afghan Deputy Prime Minister Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar a day earlier said that current heavy snowfall and rain have caused huge problems for the local people and US sanctions more aggravating plight of Afghan nation.

Following Taliban took over Kabul in mid-August last year, Washington had imposed several sanctions on Afghanistan including frozen its nearly $10 billion funds in US banks that caused huge economic crisis in the war-torn country.

According to the UN agencies, at least 23 million Afghan people are facing food shortage and their lives under risk as the new Taliban government unable to assist them because of lack financial resources.
