All 10 mountaineers feared dead after Broad Peak avalanche in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD - All 10 mountaineers caught in a massive avalanche on Pakistan's Broad Peak are believed to have died, according to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, after days of search and recovery efforts in the Karakoram mountain range.

In a condolence message issued on Sunday, Alpine Club of Pakistan President Irfan Arshad Khan expressed grief over the loss of the climbers, describing them as "accomplished mountaineers" whose deaths were a major loss to the global climbing community.

The victims included Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy of Oman, Sohail Sakhi of Pakistan, Wang Zhong of China, Mallory Geis of the United States, and five Nepalese climbers: Nirmal Purja ("Nims Dai"), Pur Bahadur Gurung ("Yukta"), Kili Pemba Sherpa ("Kilu"), Nima Sherpa, Nawang Thindu Sherpa, and Gyalu Sherpa.

The avalanche struck the expedition on Thursday at an altitude on Broad Peak (8,047 meters), one of the world's 14 peaks above 8,000 meters.

Khan also paid tribute to the Pakistan Army Aviation, Gilgit-Baltistan authorities, high-altitude rescuers, Sherpas, local climbers and the Government of Nepal for their efforts in the difficult search and recovery operation.

Earlier, the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan confirmed that a Chinese climber was among those missing and said it had activated its consular emergency response mechanism while urging Pakistani authorities to continue rescue efforts.

Authorities had initially recovered four bodies, but the Alpine Club's latest statement indicates that all 10 members of the multinational expedition lost their lives in one of the deadliest mountaineering disasters in Pakistan in recent years.
