CANBERRA (TSAT) - Omicron variant has put Australia in worsening situation as the country record over 100,000 for the fourth straight day.

The growing cases has also put the country health system in pressure and caused huge burden on hospitals in most populous states.

During past 24 hours, Australia recorded 101,223 cases, with over 50 more deaths, according to ABC News.

The country’s two populous states, NSW report 48,768 cases while Victoria also recorded 25,526 new infections in past 24 hours.

So far Australia registered 1,613,249 and 2,621 deaths, as per US John Hopkins University statistics.

The new omicron variant that first reported in Africa, is now quickly spreading across the world.

Australia, which had controlled the first variants outbreaks with strict border management, however following easing restrictions last year now omicron grabbed the country and put it into troubles.

As currently 4,599 people are in hospitals and some of them in critical conditions.

Last month, the World Health Organisation chief Tedros Ghebreyesus, warned that the new omicron variant would have "tsunami effect".

Tedros warned that the number of cases worldwide would increase due to the rapid contagiousness of omicron while the delta variant is circulating simultaneously, Anadolu Agency reported.
