China announces to lift sanctions on Australia, Canberra welcomes Beijing's move to end trade war

By The South Asia Times

CANBERRA - Australia on Friday confirmed that China will remove sanctions on Australia on August 5 and welcomed the Beijing decision to end the trade war between the two countries.

“We welcome China’s decision to remove duties on Australian barley, paving the way for our barley exporters to re-enter the Chinese market – benefiting Australian producers and Chinese consumers,” Australian foreign minister Penny Wong Tweeted.

“It affirms the calm and consistent approach that the Albanese Government has taken,” she said.

In a separate statement, the Australian top diplomat said that Beijing has notified Australian Government that from tomorrow, they will remove the 80.5% anti-dumping and countervailing duties on Australian barley.

In 2020, China imposed duties on Australian barley that blocked exports to that market, worth about $916 million in 2018-19.

“The removal of duties is the result of work by government and industry to resolve this matter.

“We acknowledge and thank industry and affected businesses for their support and patience throughout the World Trade Organization (WTO) process,” she added.

In April this year, Australia announced a pathway agreed with China to temporarily suspend our WTO dispute while Beijing conducted an expedited review of the measures.

The removal of these duties means that Australia will now discontinue legal proceedings at the WTO, Wong said.
