Australia cancel tennis star visa despite court order

CANBERRA (TSAT) - Australian government on Friday has cancelled the visa of tennis star Novak Djokovic despite court order to let him stay in the country.

According to local media, the country’s Immigration Minister Alex Hawke used his ministerial powers to cancel the visa of tennis start over on health safety grounds.

"In making this decision I carefully considered information provided to me by the Department of Home Affairs, the Australian Border Force and Mr Djokovic," ABC News quoted the immigration minister as saying.

He added that used his power on the basis of public interest.

On Jan. 6, Djokovic was detained at Melbourne by border security force officials and said the tennis start didn’t fulfil the requirement to enter Australia.

Later, he approached the court and won the case against the government.

Djokovic is expected to appeal in the court against the decision of the immigration minister.
