Xi, Trump Hold “Constructive” Talks in Busan, Agree to Deepen China-U.S. Cooperation

By The South Asia Times

BUSAN- Chinese President Xi Jinping met with U.S. President Donald J. Trump in Busan city of South Korea on Thursday, marking their first in-person meeting since Trump’s return to the White House. Both leaders vowed to stabilize and strengthen relations between the world’s two largest economies amid global uncertainty.

According to a statement from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Xi said that China and the United States should remain partners and friends, noting that it is “normal for two leading economies to have differences,” but stressed that the two sides must “navigate through the winds and waves” to ensure the “steady sailing of the giant ship of China-U.S. relations.”

Trump arrived in South Korea on Wednesday while Xi landed in Busan on Thursday morning.

Xi emphasized China’s economic resilience, citing a 5.2% growth rate in the first three quarters of 2025 and rising global trade, and reiterated that Beijing’s focus remains on internal development rather than challenging others. He called for expanding cooperation in trade, artificial intelligence, anti-money laundering, and health security.

President Trump praised Xi as “a great leader” and called China “a great country,” writing later on Truth Social that the meeting produced major agreements — including new Chinese purchases of American soybeans, sorghum, and energy products, and commitments to curb the flow of fentanyl into the United States.

Both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in trade, energy, and people-to-people exchanges, and to maintain regular contact. Trump invited Xi to visit the United States next year, while Xi welcomed Trump’s planned trip to China.

The leaders also agreed to support each other’s upcoming international events — China hosting APEC 2026 and the U.S. hosting the G20 Summit in 2026 — as a means of promoting global growth and stability.

Senior Chinese officials Cai Qi, Wang Yi, and He Lifeng attended the talks, which both governments described as “constructive and forward-looking.”

President Xi will attend the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Gyeongju which will begins from Friday
