Pentagon says Elon Musk’s Grok AI helped direct US strikes on Iran

By The South Asia Times

WASHINGTON — The US military used a specialized version of Elon Musk's Grok artificial intelligence system to help support targeting and strike operations during its military campaign against Iran, according to a sworn court declaration by a senior Pentagon official.

Cameron Stanley, the Pentagon's chief digital and artificial intelligence officer, said the Grok Gov model was integrated into the Maven Smart Systems platform, an AI-assisted military analysis and command system. According to the filing, the technology enabled U.S. forces to deploy more than 2,000 munitions against 2,000 separate targets within 96 hours during Operation Epic Fury, the U.S. campaign against Iran.

The disclosure came as part of a legal battle over xAI's Colossus 2 data center, which provides computing power for advanced AI models used by the Pentagon. Stanley argued that large-scale AI infrastructure has become critical to national defense and warned that disruptions to the facility could affect military capabilities.

The revelation marks one of the clearest public acknowledgments of the role artificial intelligence played in U.S. military operations against Iran, highlighting the growing integration of advanced AI systems into modern warfare planning, intelligence analysis and targeting.
