Wang Yi, U.S. Secretary of State Rubio Hold Talks Ahead of Expected Xi-Trump Meeting in South Korea

By The South Asia Times

Beijing -  Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone conversation on Monday, discussing the state of China-U.S. relations just days before an anticipated meeting between President Xi Jinping and  U.S. President Donald J. Trump in South Korea on Thursday.

According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang said that stable and sustainable relations between China and the United States serve not only the long-term interests of both nations but also the expectations of the international community. He noted that the long-term interactions and mutual respect between Xi and Trump “have become the most valuable strategic asset” in the relationship between the two global powers.

Wang highlighted that despite recent trade frictions, the two sides reached a framework consensus during recent economic and trade talks in Kuala Lumpur, emphasizing that equality, respect, and dialogue remain the keys to resolving differences.

He urged both sides to work together to create a positive atmosphere for upcoming high-level engagements.

Rubio, for his part, described the U.S.-China relationship as “the most important bilateral relationship in the world” and said Washington looks forward to sending a positive signal through continued high-level exchanges.
