U.S. Withdraws From WHO; Organization Rejects Allegations, Defends COVID-19 Response

By The South Asia Times

GENEVA / WASHINGTON -  The United States has formally withdrawn from the World Health Organization (WHO), Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced, citing concerns over the organization’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and claiming WHO compromised U.S. sovereignty.

In response, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the U.S. statement contained “inaccurate information.” Tedros emphasized that while WHO recommended masks, vaccines, and physical distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, it never recommended government mandates or lockdowns.

“WHO supported sovereign governments with technical advice to make decisions in the best interest of their citizens,” he said.

WHO also highlighted its longstanding collaboration with the United States, noting that as a founding member, the U.S. contributed to major global health achievements, including the eradication of smallpox and progress against polio, HIV, Ebola, influenza, tuberculosis, malaria, and neglected tropical diseases.

The agency said the U.S. withdrawal “makes both the United States and the world less safe” and will be considered by the WHO Executive Board and the World Health Assembly in upcoming sessions.

The U.S. government had claimed WHO pursued a politicized agenda and failed to share timely COVID-19 information. WHO countered these allegations, stating that the organization acted quickly after receiving reports of pneumonia of unknown cause in Wuhan on December 31, 2019, activating its emergency systems, issuing global alerts, and advising member states based on the best available evidence.

Tedros urged continued collaboration, saying WHO has strengthened pandemic preparedness systems and continues to support countries, including the U.S., in combating health threats. He also expressed hope that the United States would return to active participation in WHO, reaffirming the organization’s mission to ensure the highest attainable standard of health as a fundamental right for all people.
