Venezuela earthquake death toll soars to 920 as rescue efforts intensify

By The South Asia Times

CARACAS -  The death toll from Wednesday's devastating twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela's northern coast has climbed to 920, with 3,360 others injured, National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez confirmed Friday.

In a televised address, Rodriguez said the rare "seismic doublet" that hit the region was followed by powerful aftershocks, causing catastrophic damage across the hardest-hit areas of La Guaira state, according to Anadolu Agency.

The coastal state, which serves as the primary gateway to the capital Caracas, has borne the brunt of the disaster.

Rodriguez reported that 383 buildings sustained major damage, leaving critical infrastructure heavily compromised. More than 3,000 people have been displaced and are now being housed in temporary shelters and field hospitals. Emergency crews, bolstered by international search-and-rescue teams, continue their desperate efforts to locate survivors trapped beneath the rubble of collapsed structures.

In a separate televised statement, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello announced restrictions on access to La Guaira, citing severe traffic congestion that is obstructing rescue operations and delaying the evacuation of the injured.

"Residents themselves have said that there are many people obstructing movement and, in some way, hindering rescue efforts," Cabello said. He urged the public to avoid traveling to the affected area, warning that heavy traffic is slowing emergency operations.

Cabello also raised alarm over potential public health hazards, noting that bodies of those killed remain buried under the rubble. "There are people alive under the rubble, but unfortunately, there are also people who have died. This must be addressed," he stated. He added that anyone seeking access to La Guaira must first register with authorities in Caracas.

The US Geological Survey reported that the disaster began when two powerful earthquakes struck just 39 seconds apart on Wednesday afternoon. The 7.5 magnitude tremor occurred 14.3 miles southeast of Yumare in Yaracuy state, while the 7.2 magnitude foreshock struck 14.9 miles northeast of San Felipe, also in Yaracuy state.

International aid has poured in from nations including the United States, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Chile, and several Latin American countries, with emergency personnel, specialized equipment, and humanitarian supplies arriving to support Venezuelan authorities in the massive relief effort.
