ISLAMABAD - Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on Thursday visited a major Pakistani defence and industrial complex as he arrived in Islamabad for a two-day state visit, during which he is scheduled to meet President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and is expected to oversee the signing of multiple cooperation agreements, including in defence.

According to Pakistan’s military media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), President Mirziyoyev, accompanied by senior ministers, paid an official visit to Global Industrial & Defence Solutions (GIDS) in Rawalpindi as part of his state visit to Pakistan.

Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, warmly received the Uzbek president and his delegation and accompanied them during the tour of the facility.

During the visit, the delegation was briefed on GIDS’ wide-ranging portfolio, which includes advanced defence systems, industrial manufacturing capabilities and technological innovations.

President Mirziyoyev and his team toured key sections of the complex and viewed a range of defence products highlighting Pakistan’s expanding indigenous defence production capacity.

ISPR said the visit reflected the shared commitment of Pakistan and Uzbekistan to deepen cooperation in defence, technology and industrial development. Both sides emphasized the importance of expanding partnerships, promoting knowledge exchange and exploring opportunities for joint ventures.

President Mirziyoyev arrived in Pakistan earlier on Thursday for a two-day state visit. He is scheduled to hold talks with President Zardari and delegation-level discussions with Prime Minister Sharif on Friday. Several agreements and memorandums of understanding are expected to be signed in areas including trade, economy and defence, further strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.
