US imposes sanctions on Hizballah-affiliated businessmen in Lebanon

WASHINGTON (TSAT) - The United States government has imposed sanctions on Lebanon based Shia military and political group Hizbollah affiliated businessmen over alleged link with the group, which already designated Washington as terrorist entity.

 

In a statement, issued on Friday from the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), said that they imposed sanctions on three individual and their companies affiliated and linked with Hizbollah.

 

Among them a well-known Lebanon businessman Adnan Ayad,  his son Jihad Adnan Ayad, Ali Adel Diab, and 10 companies linked to these individuals were listed under sanctions for providing financial support to terrorist group.

 

On Jan. 18, the US also imposed sanctions on Adel Diab, Ayad’s business partner and fellow Hizballah financier.

 

“Today’s action exposes and targets Hizballah’s misuse of the international financial system to raise and launder funds for its destabilising activities as the Lebanese people suffer during an unprecedented economic crisis in Lebanon,” said Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian E. Nelson.

 

“Treasury is committed to disrupting Hizballah’s illicit activity and attempts to evade sanctions through business networks while the group doubles down on corrupt patronage networks in Lebanon,” its added.

 

Hizballah is fighting against the Israel forces from several decade and also a strong political and military force in Lebanon.

 

Washington designated the group as terror organisation in October 1997.
