US orders partial evacuation from Pakistan consulates amid regional security threats after attacks on Iran

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - The United States Department of State has ordered the departure of non-emergency US government employees and family members from its consulates in Lahore and Karachi, citing heightened security risks in Pakistan.

In an updated travel advisory issued on Tuesday, the State Department said the decision was made due to safety concerns following the outbreak of hostilities between the United States and Iran on February 28.

The order does not affect operations at the US Embassy in Islamabad, which remains at its current staffing status.

The advisory warned of an ongoing threat of potential drone and missile attacks from Iran, as well as significant disruptions to commercial air travel across the region.

The department also reiterated longstanding concerns about terrorism in Pakistan. It noted that violent extremist groups have carried out attacks in parts of the country, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, including the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). However, attacks have also occurred in major urban centers such as Karachi and Islamabad.

According to the advisory, terrorist attacks in Pakistan can occur without warning and have targeted transportation hubs, hotels, markets, shopping malls, military and security sites, airports, trains, schools, hospitals, places of worship, tourist locations and government facilities.

The evacuation order comes amid heightened regional tensions following US military aggression against Iran and subsequent retaliatory threats.

Analysts say the escalating confrontation has increased security risks for American diplomats and citizens across parts of the Middle East and South Asia.
