US Embassy Clarifies: Nonimmigrant Visas for Pakistan Not Affected

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD- The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad has clarified that nonimmigrant visas for Pakistan—covering tourists, students, skilled workers, and athletes—are not affected by recent visa policy changes.

This statement comes in the wake of the Trump administration’s announcement to pause the issuance of immigrant visas for selected countries, including Pakistan, effective January 21, 2026.

The pause is part of the administration’s broader policy affecting 75 countries, aimed at strengthening the screening and vetting process for new immigrants, said the embassy.

According to Secretary Rubio, the temporary suspension of immigrant visas is intended to ensure that applicants are thoroughly vetted, eligible for a U.S. visa, and will not rely on public assistance.

The Embassy emphasized that this action applies only to immigrant visas, while all nonimmigrant visa categories—including tourist, student, work, and athlete visas—remain operational.

This clarification seeks to address public concern in Pakistan and other affected countries, following widespread attention to the Trump administration’s policy on immigration and national security.
