Iraqi militia coalition claims 8 attacks on US bases in 24 hours amid escalating regional tensions

By The South Asia Times

BAGHDAD - An umbrella group of pro-Iran armed factions in Iraq said its fighters carried out eight attacks on bases hosting US forces over the past 24 hours, using drones and missiles, according to a statement released early Saturday.

The group, known as the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, said the operations targeted American military facilities in Iraq and nearby areas but did not provide further details about the locations or possible casualties.

The coalition, which includes several Iran-aligned militias, has claimed hundreds of similar operations against US positions in recent weeks as regional tensions intensify.

There was no immediate confirmation of the attacks from the US Central Command or the Pentagon. US officials have previously said that American and coalition forces maintain defensive measures at bases across Iraq and the wider region and have intercepted multiple drones and rockets launched by militia groups.

The reported attacks come amid a widening regional conflict that began after the United States and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran on Feb. 28. Iranian sources say the attacks have killed around 1,300 people, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Since then, Tehran has retaliated with missile and drone strikes against Israel and locations across the Middle East hosting US military assets, including sites in Jordan, Iraq and Gulf states.

The escalating exchanges have raised fears of a broader regional war while disrupting global markets and aviation routes.

Security analysts say Iran-aligned militias in Iraq have increasingly joined the confrontation, launching attacks intended to pressure Washington to withdraw its forces from the region.
