Iran says US talks in Islamabad continue despite differences after 14-hour session

By Zahid Shah

ISLAMABAD - Iran said negotiations with the United States, mediated by Pakistan in Islamabad, are ongoing despite differences, as a fresh round of trilateral talks resumed shortly after an intense 14-hour session concluded.

In a statement shared by the Government of Iran, officials confirmed that the latest round of talks ended after prolonged discussions, with technical teams from both sides now exchanging expert-level written texts. The development signals a shift toward more detailed negotiations, even as key disagreements remain unresolved.

Iranian authorities described the process as continuing, noting that a new round of discussions began within minutes of the previous session ending, underscoring the urgency and high stakes surrounding the dialogue.

Meanwhile, a security source in Tehran indicated that major sticking points persist, particularly over what it described as “excessive demands” from the US side, according to CNN.

The source said these differences have so far prevented both sides from agreeing on a common framework to advance the negotiations.

The status of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz remains a central issue. According to the source, Iran has made clear that the situation in the waterway will remain unchanged until a mutually agreed framework is reached. The source also warned that without a “realistic approach” from Washington, restrictions could remain in place.

Despite the tensions, both sides appear committed to continuing talks, with Pakistan playing a key mediating role as efforts intensify to reach a broader understanding and prevent further escalation in the region.
