UN warns 1 Million Afghan Children can die as war-torn country facing worst economic crisis

Kabul (TSAT) The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Afghanistan has warned that at least one million Afghan children could die from lack of proper nutrition  if "urgent actions" are not taken.

The UN agency while sharing a video of two year Afghan girl on Twitter and saying: "Soria, two years old, is back in the hospital after recovering from acute watery diarrhoea. She is again suffering from edema and wasting.

“Her mother has been at her bedside for the past two weeks, waiting for Soria to recover,” its said.

"Without proper action, 1 million children might die from lack of malnutrition," Unicef warned.

The UN agency also shared another story of two year old Abdul Mutaleb who was also under treatment in the hospital.

“2 yr old Abdul Mutaleb eats from a sachet of Ready to Use Therapeutic Food in his recovery from severe acute malnutrition. He’s getting his strength back,” its said.

Over 23 million Afghans are currently living under the below poverty line and most of them lost their jobs and facing starvation because of economic crisis which caused by the US economic sanctions on Afghanistan.

Despite the rising numbers of children affected by malnutrition, the Ministry of Public Health said no malnutrition care centers are active in Afghanistan. Tolo News reported.


It further reported that according to the Ministry of Public Health, the number of children suffering from malnutrition  is around 4.4. million in Afghanistan.

The humanitarian situation in Afghanistan has become worse since the Taliban took control of Kabul last year in August.

A combination of a suspension of foreign aid, the freezing of Afghan government assets, and international sanctions on the Taliban  have plunged the country, already suffering from high poverty
