Trump says US-Iran peace deal to be signed today as Pakistan, Saudi Arabia welcome final-stage talks

WASHINGTON/ISLAMABAD - U.S. President Donald Trump said a landmark agreement between the United States and Iran is scheduled to be signed today, expressing confidence that the deal will prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and help stabilize the Middle East.

In a statement posted on social media, Trump described the agreement as "the exact opposite" of the 2015 nuclear deal reached under Barack Obama, saying it would create a permanent barrier to Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon through development, purchase, or any other means. He also said no money would be exchanged under the accord and that the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened to all maritime traffic immediately after the agreement is signed.

Trump added that Washington looked forward to working with Iran and countries across the Middle East, while warning that the United States retained "the ultimate alternative" should the process fail.

Meanwhile, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia welcomed the US-Iran negotiations reaching their final stage.

According to Pakistan's Foreign Office, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar held a telephone conversation with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, during which both leaders welcomed the progress in the talks and noted that the electronic signing ceremony was scheduled for today.

The Saudi foreign minister appreciated Pakistan's consistent efforts in support of mediation and dialogue throughout the process, while both sides expressed hope that the agreement would contribute to lasting peace and stability in the region.

The two ministers also discussed the forthcoming Regional Four Foreign Ministers (R-4) meeting, scheduled to be held in Egypt later this months.
