Trump Reportedly Halts Planned Strike on Iran at Last Minute as Tensions Ease

By The South Asia Times

WASHINGTON - A planned U.S. military strike on Iran was reportedly called off at the final stage after President Donald Trump personally intervened, amid warnings from advisers about the potential consequences of an attack, according to media reports.

The decision came after heightened regional tensions that had prompted Iran to temporarily close its airspace. Iranian authorities later reopened the airspace on Thursday, a move seen as a signal of de-escalation following the abrupt halt of the operation.

According to the reports, Trump’s advisers cautioned that a strike on Iran would likely trigger immediate retaliation, including attacks on Israel and U.S. military bases across the region. Officials also warned that military action would not guarantee any strategic objective, including regime change, and could instead widen the conflict.

Regional dynamics also weighed on the decision. Reports said Saudi Arabia informed Washington that it would not allow its airspace to be used for any attack on Iran, underscoring concerns among U.S. partners about being drawn into a broader confrontation.

Analysts noted that the internal situation in Iran further reduced the prospects of achieving political change through military means. In recent days, large crowds have reportedly taken to the streets in support of the Iranian government, while opposition activity linked to exiled figure Reza Pahlavi has largely gone underground following government actions and arrests of activists accused of encouraging unrest.

The White House has not officially commented on the reported decision, but sources said Trump has told advisers that he would only authorize military action if it promised a clear and decisive outcome. With regional actors urging restraint and officials warning of severe repercussions, the last-minute halt appears to have prevented a major escalation in the Middle East
