Trump says Iran deal could come 'over the next week' as Ilhan Omar accuses Israel of 'exporting Gaza playbook' to Lebanon

By The South Asia Times

WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump announced that a deal with Iran to extend the ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz could be finalized "over the next week," even as a top Democratic lawmaker accused Israel of acting with "near-total impunity" and called for an end to US aid.

In a telephone conversation with ABC News chief Washington correspondent Jonathan Karl, Trump expressed optimism about the negotiations with Tehran.

"Looking good, looking good," Trump said. "There was a little glitch today, but I turned that one around very quickly, as you probably noticed earlier."

The president explained that the "glitch" involved Iranian anger over Israeli attacks on Lebanon.

"So, I spoke with Hezbollah, and I said no shooting, and I talked to Bibi [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu], and said no shooting, and they both stopped shooting each other," Trump said.

His remarks came shortly after reports emerged that Iran's top diplomat had expressed serious concern over ceasefire violations in Lebanon by Israel and potential attacks on parts of Beirut, requesting Pakistan's help to de-escalate the situation.

- Omar: 'NO MORE US AID TO ISRAEL'

Separately, US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar issued a blistering condemnation of Israel's actions in Lebanon, drawing a direct comparison to the war in Gaza.

In a post on X, Omar accused Israel of "exporting the Gaza playbook to Lebanon," claiming the conflict there is "killing thousands and displacing over a million people."

She alleged that Israel has acted with "near-total impunity" and has repeatedly been able to "commit genocide and other atrocities" without being meaningfully held accountable.

"NO MORE US AID TO ISRAEL," Omar wrote, doubling down on her long-standing opposition to American military assistance to the Israeli government.
