Suicide bomber among four militants killed as Pakistan foils checkpoint attack in South Waziristan

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan's military said security forces foiled an attempted militant assault on a checkpoint in the country's northwestern South Waziristan district on Saturday, killing four attackers, including a suicide bomber, without suffering any casualties.

According to the military's media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the attackers attempted to storm a security forces check post using an explosives-laden vehicle. Troops engaged and destroyed the vehicle outside the perimeter of the post, killing the suicide bomber before it could reach the target.

The military said the remaining three militants fled into a nearby compound, where they were later killed during a clearance operation conducted by security forces.

No security personnel were killed or injured during the operation, the ISPR said.

The military described the attackers as members of "Fitna Al Khwarij" and said that the group was sponsored by India.

A sanitisation operation is underway in the area to ensure no other militants remain, according to the statement.

The ISPR said Pakistan's security forces and law enforcement agencies would continue counterterrorism operations under the nationwide Azm-e-Istehkam campaign, which aims to eliminate militant threats across the country.
