SEOUL - South Korean prosecutors on Saturday made another request to extend impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol for next ten days.

The requested filed in a Seoul court hours after the court rejected the prosecutors earlier request to extend Yoon detention till Feb. 6.

On Friday, a South Korean court rejected a request by prosecutors to extend the detention period of President Yoon Suk Yeol until February 6. The decision comes amid heightened political tension as authorities continue to investigate allegations surrounding the President's last month martial law bid.

Prosecutors had submitted the request , arguing that additional time was necessary to complete their investigation. They cited the complexity of the case and the need to gather further evidence to substantiate their claims. However, the court ruled that there was insufficient justification to keep the President in custody beyond the current detention period.

President Yoon has consistently denied any wrongdoing, calling the investigation politically motivated. His legal team welcomed the court's decision, stating it underscores the lack of merit in the prosecutors’ case.

“The rejection of this extension request demonstrates that the prosecution’s claims lack the necessary evidence,” Yoon's legal representative said in a statement on Friday.

The case has sparked significant public debate, with Yoon's supporters criticizing the investigation as a political witch hunt, while critics argue that no one should be above the law.

This latest court decision adds another layer of uncertainty to the ongoing investigation.

President Yoon, who assumed office in 2022, was impeached last month over his short-lived martial law on Dec.3. His case is pending in Constitutional Court to decide his future, if court maintain the National Assembly impeachment, fresh election will be held within 60 days.
