South Korea Wildfires Continue to Rage, Death Toll Rises to 24

SEOUL - Firefighters in South Korea are struggling to contain a series of wildfires that have devastated the southeastern region, claiming at least 24 lives. Despite large-scale efforts, strong winds and dry weather continue to hinder containment measures.

Authorities have deployed scores of firefighting helicopters, nearly 5,000 personnel, and around 560 pieces of equipment to battle the blazes, according to Yonhap News Agency.

The wildfires first ignited in Sancheong County, South Gyeongsang Province, last Friday and have since spread northeast, engulfing vast areas.

For five consecutive days, the fires have advanced into Uiseong and are now threatening neighboring regions, including Andong, Cheongsong, Yeongyang, and Yeongdeok. Officials fear the flames could spread even further toward the eastern coastal areas, raising alarms that they may reach Uljin, home to a major nuclear power plant.

According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, 20 of the 24 confirmed fatalities were reported in Uiseong, while the remaining four were from Sancheong. Earlier reports from police and fire authorities also noted 21 deaths in North Gyeongsang Province, with casualties recorded in Andong, Cheongsong, Yeongyang, and Yeongdeok.

Firefighters face additional challenges due to unpredictable wind patterns. While the wildfires in Uiseong initially spread eastward, shifting southerly and southwesterly winds on Tuesday and Wednesday have increased the difficulty of containment efforts. Forestry officials have urged caution, warning that sudden changes in wind direction could further accelerate the fire’s spread.

With no immediate relief in sight, authorities continue to work around the clock to prevent further devastation and protect communities at risk.
