Impeachment Motion Against South Korean President Yoon Fails Due to Lack of Quorum

By The South Asia Times

SEOUL - South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol survived an impeachment motion on Saturday  over his failed attempt to impose martial law in East Asian country.

The move, initiated by opposition lawmakers following Yoon’s controversial leadership decisions, failed to gain traction after members of the ruling People Power Party (PPP) boycotted the vote.

The impeachment attempt was driven by growing discontent over President Yoon’s brief declaration of martial law, which was quickly rescinded amid public and parliamentary backlash.

Opposition lawmakers accused Yoon of overstepping his constitutional authority and undermining democratic principles, making his impeachment a focal point of national debate.

However, the ruling PPP’s decision to abstain from the vote deprived the opposition of the two-thirds majority needed to pass the motion. As a result, the impeachment effort was shelved, allowing Yoon to remain in office.

The PPP dismissed the impeachment as politically motivated, claiming the opposition lacked evidence to justify removing the president. "This motion was not about justice or accountability—it was a reckless attempt to destabilize the government," said a senior PPP official.

The Democratic Party (DP), which led the impeachment push, condemned the ruling party's tactics. "By avoiding the vote, the PPP has not only shielded the president but also failed the people of South Korea," said a DP spokesperson. "This was an opportunity to hold President Yoon accountable for his actions."

The impeachment attempt and its failure have further polarized South Korea’s political landscape. While Yoon’s supporters celebrated his survival, many citizens critical of his leadership viewed the failed motion as a missed opportunity for accountability. Protests erupted in several cities, with demonstrators both for and against the president voicing their opinions.

Thousands of people also gathered in front of the National Assembly, who demanding the removal of President and said Yoon should immediatly resign.

The main opposition parties are expected to file another motion against Yoon in parliament.
