Saudi Arab, Thailand resumes diplomatic ties after 3 decades

 

RIYADH (TSAT) - Saudi Arabia and Thailand finally resumed their diplomatic ties that remained cut off for more than three decades.

According to to the state-run Saudi News Agency, the two countries have announced to re-established their ties during the meeting between Thailand's Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha  and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh.

Prayut Chan-O-Cha arrived on Tuesday in Riyadh on his two day official visit to the Kingdom, the first high official visit of Thai leader to the country. 

The diplomatic ties frozen since 1989 after a Thai-born janitor Kriangkrai Techamong stole $20 million worth of precious gems in 1989 from the home of a Saudi prince, that pushed the two countries into diplomatic row.

“The two sides agreed on important steps to be taken to reinvigorate their bilateral relations, including the appointment of ambassadors to their respective capitals in the near future and the setting up of consultative mechanisms for consolidating their bilateral cooperation,” said in the joint statement, published by the SPA.

The two leaders also agreed to enhance cooperation in all filed including the Saudi Airline will resume its flights to Bangkok as well.

 

Meanwhile, the Thai Prime Minister also assured the Crown Prince that his government would resolve all cases that pending and related to the Kingdom.

 

Riyadh wants to investigate the theft of diamond issue as they thought that some senior official were behind the 1989 case.
