By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - The Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia has further strengthened and consolidated bilateral ties, reaffirming the enduring partnership between the two countries, according to a press release issued after a high-level Saudi military delegation’s visit to the Centre for Aerospace & Security Studies (CASS), Islamabad.

CASS hosted a delegation from King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Command and Staff College, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), on Wednesday.

The visit focused on the growing importance of the aerial domain in contemporary and future conflicts and underscored the need to deepen defence cooperation between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, long-standing strategic partners.

As an independent think tank, CASS continues to engage with national and international academia as well as practitioners with a focus on national security in its broader context. The interaction with the Saudi delegation was part of CASS’s ongoing efforts to foster professional dialogue on emerging security challenges and opportunities for collaboration.

Welcoming the delegation, President CASS Air Marshal (Retd.) Javaid Ahmed highlighted the depth and longevity of Pakistan–Saudi Arabia relations, noting that bilateral ties date back to 1947. He recalled that the first formal agreement between the two countries—the Friendship Agreement—was signed in 1951, laying the foundation for a partnership built on trust, shared interests, and mutual respect.

Air Marshal (Retd.) Javaid Ahmed also outlined Pakistan’s evolving security environment and the challenges confronting the country. He explained how, in response to these challenges, Pakistan has developed and modernized its armed forces, with a particular focus on airpower, joint operations, and technological innovation. He emphasized that the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia has played a pivotal role in further strengthening and consolidating defence ties, providing a robust framework for cooperation across multiple domains.

Following the welcome address, CASS researchers delivered presentations on key conclusions from ongoing studies and highlighted salient features of future aerospace developments. The sessions examined how modern airpower capabilities, emerging technologies, and integrated operations are reshaping the character of warfare and defence planning in both regional and global contexts.

An interactive question-and-answer segment focused on threat assessments in the Middle Eastern theatre and possible mitigation measures, reflecting shared security concerns and the importance of coordinated responses. Discussions also explored avenues for enhanced institutional collaboration, including future cooperation modalities between King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Command and Staff College and CASS in areas such as research, academic exchanges, and professional development.

The visit underscored the growing strategic convergence between Islamabad and Riyadh, particularly in the defence and aerospace domains. It also reaffirmed the commitment of both sides to deepen engagement through dialogue, knowledge-sharing, and joint initiatives.

According to the press release, the engagement reflects the broader trajectory of Pakistan–Saudi Arabia relations, with the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement serving as a cornerstone of the partnership and a catalyst for expanding cooperation in an increasingly complex regional and global security environment.
