PM Shehbaz Meets UN Chief, Reaffirms Pakistan’s Support for Multilateralism

By The South Asia Times

New York – Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening multilateralism and supporting the UN’s central role in tackling global challenges.

In a warm and cordial exchange, the prime minister lauded the secretary-general’s leadership in advancing peace, stability, and inclusive global governance, particularly by amplifying the voices of developing countries.

He also expressed gratitude for Guterres’ solidarity with Pakistan during last year’s devastating floods, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced climate finance to help vulnerable states mitigate and adapt to climate change.

Sharif raised issues of vital concern to Pakistan, including the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, violations of the Indus Waters Treaty, and the threat of externally sponsored terrorism. He called for a just and peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue in line with UN Security Council resolutions, while commending Guterres’ efforts to ease recent tensions in South Asia.

Turning to the Middle East, he voiced serious concern over the crisis in Gaza, urging an immediate ceasefire, expanded humanitarian aid, and a political process leading to a sovereign Palestinian state.

The secretary-general praised Pakistan’s constructive role and principled positions at the UN. Both sides agreed to intensify efforts to reinforce the UN’s indispensable role in promoting global peace and sustainable development.
