Qatar hands over death sentence to 8 Indian agents over spying for Israel

By The South Asia Times

DOHA - A Qatari court has handed over death sentences to eight Indian agents for spying.

Indian Foreign Ministry on Thursday confirmed the development and said their citizen has been sentenced by a court in Qatar.

“We have initial information that the Court of First Instance of Qatar has today passed a judgement in the case involving 8 Indian employees of Al Dahra company,” said the ministry.

Last year, the Qatar government arrested eight Indian agents for spying on a submarine program on behalf of Israel

The eight individuals are former officers in the Indian Navy and were arrested in late August, according to Al-Jazeera.

“We are deeply shocked by the verdict of death penalty and are awaiting the detailed judgement,” said Indian Foreign Ministry.

However, the ministry refused to share further details with media and called it “confidential.”

Last week, Canada has pulled 41 diplomats from India after relations tensed between the two countries over killing of a Sikh leader in Canada.

Last month,  Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly accused India of being involved in the assassination of Canadian Sikh Hardeep Singh Nijjar. He was gunned down by two masked assailants in the parking lot of a Sikh temple in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 19. No arrests have been made.
