Philippines Enacts Law Mandating Immediate Burial for Muslims in Accordance with Islamic Traditions

By The South Asia Times

MANILA – Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed into law Republic Act 12160, also known as the Philippine Islamic Burial Act, ensuring the immediate and proper burial of Filipino Muslims in accordance with their religious customs.

The newly enacted law mandates that the remains of deceased Filipino Muslims be buried as soon as possible, ideally within 24 hours of death, in line with traditional Islamic practices. It also directs public and private institutions, including hospitals, funeral homes, and local government units, to facilitate timely compliance with Islamic burial rites, according to Inquirer

The measure aims to uphold the religious freedom and cultural rights of the Muslim community, which comprises a significant portion of the country’s population, particularly in Mindanao.

Republic Act 12160 also emphasizes coordination with the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) to ensure that all necessary protocols and facilities are available to support dignified and timely Islamic burials nationwide.

The passage of the law has been widely welcomed by Muslim leaders and communities across the Philippines as a step toward inclusivity and respect for religious diversity.
