US, Pakistan vow to jointly confront terrorist networks in South Asia

By The South Asia Times

WASHINGTON – The United States and Pakistan have pledged to intensify their counterterrorism cooperation, vowing to confront militant organizations that threaten regional stability, following the fourth round of the US-Pakistan Counterterrorism Dialogue in Washington, according to a joint statement issued by Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The talks, held on Tuesday, were co-chaired by US Coordinator for Counterterrorism Ambassador Gregory LoGerfo and Pakistan's Special Secretary Ambassador Nabeel Munir. The dialogue reaffirmed shared interests in the bilateral counterterrorism partnership and the two nations' determination to tackle a common threat.

The delegations exchanged views on the evolving threat environment, explored avenues to enhance collaboration, and discussed measures to strengthen border security and disrupt terrorist facilitation networks.

In a significant show of alignment, the United States and Pakistan affirmed their joint resolve to confront specific terrorist organizations deemed dangerous to both nations and the wider region. These include ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K), al-Qa'ida, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its affiliates.

The commitment follows Australia's recent sanctioning of the BLA in May 2026, acting on a group designated as a terrorist organization by Pakistan, indicating growing international pressure on the group.

The BLA, a terrorist group, has been responsible for numerous attacks in Pakistan's Balochistan province, targeting security forces and Chinese interests in the region.

The two governments committed to ensuring their counterterrorism collaboration remains robust, framing the effort as part of an "enduring vision of regional peace, prosperity, and stability."
