ISLAMABAD - Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan stands in solidarity with Iran following the assassination of its Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, extending what he described as the nation’s “most sincere condolences.”

In a message posted on social media, Sharif said the Government and people of Pakistan join the Iranian people “in their hour of grief and sorrow” and prayed for patience and strength for them in the face of what he termed an irreparable loss.

The prime minister also expressed concern over what he called a violation of international law, stating that it is a long-established international convention that heads of state or government should not be targeted.

- High-level security review

Earlier, Sharif chaired a high-level meeting in Islamabad to review the evolving regional and domestic security situation amid rising tensions in the Middle East.

Officials conducted a detailed assessment of regional developments, including the situation in Afghanistan, and discussed Pakistan’s role and possible measures to promote peace and stability. The prime minister was also briefed on internal security arrangements across the country.

On Sharif’s instructions, the meeting reviewed efforts to evacuate Pakistani nationals from Iran. According to a Foreign Office briefing, arrangements are being made to facilitate their safe return via Azerbaijan.

Senior civil and military officials, including the Chief of Army Staff and key federal ministers, attended the meeting as Pakistan heightened its security preparedness in response to the rapidly developing situation.
