Pakistan Launches Space4Climate Initiative to Boost Climate Resilience Through GeoAI Technology

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan has taken a significant step toward tackling climate challenges as the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced the launch of a new climate-focused initiative by the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission.

The Space4Climate Initiative aims to strengthen climate resilience and enhance environmental action through the use of advanced space-based technologies, said ISPR in a statement.

At the heart of this initiative is a GeoAI-enabled Climate Observatory—an integrated digital platform designed to transform satellite data and geospatial analytics into actionable insights.

The platform will enable policymakers, researchers, and local communities to better understand and respond to environmental changes. It consolidates satellite observations, modeling, and analytical tools to monitor a wide range of climate indicators.

These include atmospheric pollutants such as aerosols, sulfur oxides (SOx), and nitrogen oxides (NOx), along with greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane. In addition, the system tracks forests, glaciers, coastal dynamics, river systems, and land-use changes across the country.

The observatory also focuses on identifying and monitoring climate-induced hazards, including floods, droughts, heatwaves, sea-level rise, and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs)—a growing threat in northern Pakistan.

By integrating space-based data with ground observations, the Space4Climate Initiative is expected to support evidence-based policymaking and promote sustainable development. The move aligns Pakistan’s climate strategy with broader global efforts to combat climate change and improve environmental resilience.

Officials say the initiative reflects Pakistan’s increasing commitment to leveraging technology and innovation in addressing one of the most pressing challenges of the modern era.
