Pakistan NDMA issues heavy rain, flood warning for northern regions ahead of Eid holidays

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a stark warning for heavy rain, flash floods, and landslides across the country’s northern belt from May 26 to May 31, 2026, coinciding with the Eid holidays when millions of tourists are expected to travel to scenic mountain destinations.

In a statement released Friday, the NDMA identified a “very high to high” risk of landslides across Gilgit-Baltistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, citing persistent rainfall, saturated soils, and unstable mountain terrain.

Major hotspot areas include popular tourist corridors such as the Karakoram Highway (KKH), Hunza Valley, Nagar, Gilgit, Chilas, the Shigar Valley Road, the Astore–Rattu road section, as well as the Kalam, Ushu, and Chitral valleys. Specific high-risk locations include Shimshal Valley, the surroundings of Attabad Lake, Karimabad and its adjoining slopes, the Gulmit–Passu corridor, and the Dasu–Pattan road section, among dozens of others.

Authorities warned that key transport lifelines—including the Karakoram Highway, Chilas road, Jaglot Skardu Road, and regional mountain access routes—remain highly vulnerable to debris flows, rockfalls, slope collapse, and temporary road blockages throughout the forecast period.

The warning comes as a severe heatwave grips Pakistan’s plains, driving large numbers of residents to plan Eid holiday travel to the cooler northern scenic destinations. The NDMA urged local authorities and travelers to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel along landslide-prone roads.

“Relevant departments should monitor vulnerable slopes continuously,” the NDMA said. “Emergency response teams should be kept ready for rapid deployment, and precautionary measures should be implemented to manage potential road blockages and ensure public safety.”

The agency advised tourists planning to visit Gilgit-Baltistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Kashmir during the holidays to check weather updates regularly and coordinate with local disaster management offices before undertaking any mountain journeys.
