At least 9 Pakistani killed 2 missing in tragic boats capsized in Italy, foreign ministry says

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Foreign Ministry on Thursday confirmed that at least nine Pakistani were killed and two are still missing two different boat incidents in Italy.

 

During a weekly press briefing, Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said that 17 Pakistani have also been rescued. 

 

“Two Pakistani nationals have lost their lives in the tragic incident. 17 Pakistanis have been rescued while two individuals are still missing. Our Embassy in Rome remains actively engaged with the Italian authorities for the welfare of the survivors and transportation of the mortal remains of the deceased,” she said.

 

According to Baloch, In a separate tragic incident, thus far 7 Pakistani nationals have perished in a boat wreck near Benghazi, Libya.

 

“ Embassy of Pakistan in Libya is facilitating the process of identification of the bodies and transportation of the mortal remains to Pakistan with the support of local authorities and the International Committee of the Red Cross. The Embassy and Ministry of Foreign Affairs are also in contact with the families of the deceased,” she added.

 

On Sunday, a vessel carrying some 200 migrants sank in rough seas near Steccato di Cutro, a seaside resort in southern Italy. 

 

Former Pakistani woman hockey player Shahida Raza was also among the 67 people who lost their lives in the tragic incident.
