Iranian President tells Pakistan’s Sharif trust needed for talks with US

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD-  Masoud Pezeshkian has emphasized the need to build trust as a prerequisite for any potential talks with the United States, during a lengthy telephone conversation with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, officials said on Saturday.

The call, which lasted over an hour, focused on the escalating hostilities in the Middle East and ongoing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions.

Sharif strongly condemned continued Israeli strikes on Iran, including recent attacks on civilian infrastructure, and reaffirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with the Iranian people. He also expressed condolences over the reported loss of more than 1,900 lives and wished a swift recovery for the injured and displaced.

According to Pakistan’s Prime Minister’s Office, Sharif briefed Pezeshkian on Islamabad’s diplomatic outreach to key international stakeholders, including the United States and Gulf nations, aimed at fostering conditions conducive to dialogue and peace.

The Iranian president, while appreciating Pakistan’s mediation efforts, underlined that trust-building would be essential for any meaningful negotiations or third-party mediation. He welcomed Pakistan’s role in advocating for dialogue and de-escalation.

Sharif, in turn, reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to supporting peace initiatives and maintaining regional stability through continued diplomatic engagement.

The conversation comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with increasing calls from international actors for restraint and renewed diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.
