Calling millions of citizens ‘digital terrorists’ dangerous for Pakistan: Imran Khan

- Prime minister Shehbaz Sharif says social media campaign against military leaders won't be tolerated

ISLAMABAD  - Pakistan’s incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan warned that calling millions of Pakistani social media users as "digital terrorists" was dangerous for the country.

"A few people living in their 70s, who are completely ignorant of how social media works, share the title of digital terrorism," Khan said in a statement shared on his X by his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.

He was apparently referring to statements made by ruling party Pakistan Muslim League (N) and the country's army chief Gen. Asim Munir, who have blasted critical social media campaigns as “digital terrorism.”

Recently, the military spokesman, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif also called the social media activists criticizing the military leadership as "digital terrorists."

"90% of the population of Pakistan stands with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf as they voted in favor of Tehreek-e-Insaaf on Feb. 8. If all of them are called digital terrorists, a gap will be created between the army and the people," Khan said.

"The same thing happened in 1971 when Gen. Yahya Khan conducted military operation against a large number of people in Dhaka on March 25, 1971," Khan said, referring to creation of Bangladesh.

He warned if the “majority of the people are called terrorists even now, it will have dangerous consequences for the country.”

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also regretted the alleged campaign by Khan's supporters against the country's military leadership and said government “will not tolerate it at all.”

However, PTI has accused the government of launching a crackdown against its social media activists, several of whom were arrested in last several days.
