Pakistan Confirms Airstrikes in Afghanistan's Paktika Province, Claims Targets Were Terrorists

By The South Asia Times

Islamabad, Pakistan – Pakistan's Foreign Ministry has confirmed carrying out airstrikes inside Afghanistan’s Paktika province, stating the operation targeted terrorist hideouts responsible for cross-border attacks.

Mumtaz Zehra Baloch, spokesperson for the ministry, defended the strikes, asserting they were necessary to protect Pakistani citizens.

During a weekly press briefing, Baloch said, “Pakistan carried out precise and intelligence-based operations targeting terrorist elements in the Barmal district of Paktika. These groups have been actively planning and executing attacks against our nation.”

The statement comes amid rising tensions between the two neighbors after Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban government’s spokesperson, reported 46 fatalities in the strikes, claiming many of the victims were civilians, including women and children.

Baloch dismissed these allegations, emphasizing that no women or children were harmed in the operation. “Our forces operate with utmost caution to avoid collateral damage. The claims of civilian casualties are baseless and aimed at maligning Pakistan’s efforts to combat terrorism,” she said.

The airstrikes have sparked strong reactions within Afghanistan, with the Taliban leadership condemning the incursion as a violation of Afghanistan’s sovereignty.

The incident highlights escalating tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan over border security. Pakistan has frequently accused Afghanistan-based militants of orchestrating attacks on its soil, while the Taliban has criticized Pakistan for cross-border interventions.

The international community has expressed concern over the escalating conflict, urging both nations to engage in dialogue and avoid actions that could destabilize the region further.

Observers warn that such operations risk straining relations between the two countries at a time when regional cooperation is crucial for stability. Meanwhile, Pakistan has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding its citizens and maintaining security along its borders.
