Pakistan Condemns Torture in Palestine and Kashmir, Reaffirms Global Commitment to Human Rights

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD, June 26 — On the occasion of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry issued a strong statement expressing solidarity with victims of torture across the globe and highlighting the continued suffering in Palestine and Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

In the official statement, the Foreign Office reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to eradicating torture and upholding human dignity. It stressed that Islam upholds the sanctity and dignity of every human being, and that any act of torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment is incompatible with the core Islamic values of justice, mercy, and compassion.

“Guided by these principles and our international obligations, Pakistan is actively working to eliminate torture by implementing legal reforms, enhancing institutional safeguards, and establishing oversight mechanisms to ensure accountability and the rule of law,” the statement read. It also noted that efforts are underway to provide victims with medical, legal, and psychosocial support.

The Foreign Ministry expressed grave concern over the “widespread and systematic use of torture as an instrument of oppression in situations of foreign occupation.” It specifically pointed to the Occupied Palestinian Territories and IIOJK, where it said people “continue to be subjected to the worst forms of torture and other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment” by occupying powers in an effort to suppress their right to self-determination.

Pakistan called on the international community to not only condemn these violations but also hold perpetrators accountable and work towards ending the plight of the victims of torture and oppression.

The statement concluded with a reaffirmation of Pakistan’s commitment to the global fight against torture and the promotion of human rights and dignity for all.
