Pakistan Voices Deep Concern Over Venezuela Crisis at UN Security Council

By The South Asia Times

NEW YORK - Pakistan has expressed deep concern over the escalating situation in Venezuela, warning that rising tensions in the Caribbean could further undermine regional and international peace and security. The remarks were made by Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Acting Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in Venezuela on Monday.

Addressing the Council, Ambassador Jadoon stressed that the United Nations Charter obliges all member states to refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity and political independence of sovereign states. He underscored the principles of sovereign equality, non-interference in internal affairs, and the peaceful settlement of disputes as the cornerstone of the international system.

Pakistan cautioned that unilateral military actions violate these fundamental principles and set dangerous precedents that risk eroding the global legal framework. Such actions, he said, fuel instability and could lead to unpredictable and long-lasting consequences.

Calling for restraint and de-escalation, Pakistan emphasized that dialogue and diplomacy must remain the only viable path forward. Ambassador Jadoon said durable solutions to political differences in Venezuela could only be achieved through peaceful means, with full respect for the will of the Venezuelan people and without external interference.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s hope that Latin America and the Caribbean would continue to remain a Zone of Peace, free from conflict and confrontation, and progress toward greater regional cooperation and prosperity.

Pakistan urged all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint, avoid actions that could exacerbate the volatile situation, and engage in dialogue, including through mediation efforts and the good offices of the UN Secretary-General.

Concluding his statement, Ambassador Jadoon reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to contributing constructively to the Security Council’s responsibility to maintain international peace and security, stressing that the peace, stability, and welfare of the Venezuelan people must remain the overriding objective of all international efforts.
