Pakistan pushes for diplomacy as Strait of Hormuz crisis deepens, reaffirms role as mediator to end US, Iran tension

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has reaffirmed its active engagement in diplomatic efforts to resolve the escalating crisis in the Gulf and the Middle East, particularly the standoff in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, as the country continues to navigate a complex geopolitical landscape involving the United States and Iran .

At a weekly press briefing on Thursday, Foreign Office Spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi stated that Pakistan remains engaged "alongside other brotherly states" in sincere efforts to resolve the crisis, emphasizing that resolving the standoff in the Strait of Hormuz is key to easing the wider conflict. Andrabi stressed that any meaningful progress would create a conducive environment for the parties to return to the framework of dialogue envisaged under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and the Pakistan-Qatar Joint Statement.

The Islamabad MoU, a landmark agreement electronically signed by the US and Iranian presidents and endorsed by Pakistan in its mediating role, provided a framework for dialogue with the aim of reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending the conflict. However, the agreement has come under strain, with hostilities resuming and complicating the path towards a sustainable settlement.

"The resolution of the standoff in the Strait of Hormuz will obviously create a conducive environment for the parties to return to the Islamabad MoU and the framework of talks as envisaged," Andrabi said, adding, "We hope that the agreement on the Strait of Hormuz will pave the way for continued dialogue, particularly the resumption of technical-level talks between Iran and the United States".

Andrabi emphasized that Pakistan's role in the process is "important" and that the country is doing its utmost to bring all parties back to the negotiating table.

He also acknowledged and deeply appreciated Oman's valuable contribution as a littoral state overlooking the Strait, and its steadfast efforts to foster de-escalation and peaceful coexistence.

Pakistan's recent diplomatic engagements, including telephone conversations between Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Iran, reflect its commitment to promoting dialogue and regional stability
