By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - An Investiture Ceremony to confer military awards to officers and soldiers of Pakistan Army was held today at General Headquarters, Rawalpindi. Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, COAS & CDF, as the chief guest, conferred the awards to the families of shuhada, officers and soldiers in recognition of exceptional gallantry in operations and distinguished services rendered to the nation.

Decorations conferred included 50 Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Military) and 12 Tamgha-i-Basalat. Medals awarded posthumously were received with honour by the families of the Shuhada.

Paying tribute to the Shuhada and Ghazis, the Field Marshal stated, "Shuhada and Ghazis remain the enduring pride of the nation. Their honour and sacrifice are a sacred trust for every Pakistani. Peace and security of our motherland are owed to their supreme sacrifices and unwavering devotion to duty," according to ISPR.

The Field Marshal also expressed profound admiration for the resilience, dignity and steadfastness demonstrated by the families of Shuhada, acknowledging their unparalleled sacrifices and unwavering commitment to the homeland.

Commending the operational preparedness and unwavering resolve of Pakistan Army and Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs), the Field Marshal lauded their sustained efforts against terrorists and reaffirmed that the fight against terrorism will continue with full national resolve until enduring peace and stability are achieved across the country, as per ISPR.

The term "shuhada" -- Arabic for "martyrs" -- refers to soldiers and personnel who have laid down their lives in counter-terrorism operations and border defence. "Ghazis" denote wounded or surviving veterans who have demonstrated exceptional valour in combat. Pakistan has been battling militant insurgencies for over two decades, particularly in its northwestern tribal regions along the Afghan border, suffering tens of thousands of military and civilian casualties.

The awards conferred -- Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Military), or Star of Excellence, and Tamgha-i-Basalat, or Medal of Valour -- are among Pakistan’s highest military decorations, typically awarded for acts of gallantry in the face of enemy action.
