Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif to visit China on Saturday

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD — Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will begin a state visit to China on Saturday, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced while addressing the Senate of Pakistan on Wednesday.

Dar said he would accompany Sharif during the May 23–26 visit, which comes as the two countries mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

During the visit, Sharif is expected to hold meetings with Chinese leaders and business representatives, while Pakistan and China will also convene sessions of the Pakistan-China Political Parties Forum and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Joint Consultative Mechanism.

“A large multi-party parliamentary delegation from Pakistan will participate in these meetings,” Dar told lawmakers.

The foreign minister made the remarks during a Senate session attended by a Chinese delegation led by Cai Dafeng.

Dar described Pakistan-China ties as an “All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership” built on mutual trust, respect and shared interests.

He praised China’s support for Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while reiterating Islamabad’s support for the “One-China principle.”

“Our recent joint initiatives to promote peace and stability in the Gulf and the Middle East reflect our shared sense of responsibility as peace-loving nations,” Dar said.

Highlighting economic cooperation, Dar said the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor had played a key role in transforming Pakistan’s economy and said Islamabad looked forward to advancing “CPEC 2.0,” focused on industrialization, agriculture and socio-economic development.

He also emphasized close coordination between Pakistan and China at international forums, including the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

“Pakistan-China friendship has stood all tests of time,” Dar said, concluding his speech with the slogan: “Long live China-Pakistan friendship.”
