Lebanese armed forces chief calls on Pakistan's Field Marshal Asim Munir amid Israeli aggression

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - General Rodolphe Haykal, Commander-in-Chief of the Lebanese Armed Forces, called on Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at General Headquarters on Tuesday, as Lebanon continues to reel from months of devastating Israeli attacks that have killed thousands and displaced over 1.6 million people.

Upon his arrival at GHQ, the visiting dignitary was presented a guard of honor by a smartly turned-out tri-services contingent, according to a statement by Pakistan's Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

During the meeting, both military leaders exchanged views on matters of mutual interest, the evolving regional security environment, defense cooperation, and prospects for enhancing bilateral military relations. The discussions focused on strengthening professional interactions, training cooperation, and institutional linkages between the armed forces of the two countries.

Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir reaffirmed the importance Pakistan attaches to its longstanding and cordial relations with Lebanon and underscored the Pakistan Army's commitment to expanding defense collaboration with the Lebanese Armed Forces.

General Haykal appreciated the professionalism and operational excellence of the Pakistan Armed Forces and acknowledged their contributions to regional peace, stability, and international peacekeeping efforts.

The Lebanese commander's visit comes amid a devastating Israeli military campaign against Lebanon that has killed more than 3,600 people, injured over 11,000 others, and displaced more than 1.6 million since March 2, according to Lebanese officials.

On Monday, the United Nations reported that peacekeepers in Lebanon have documented extensive Israeli military activity in southern Lebanon and repeated violations of Lebanese airspace, despite a ceasefire announced last week.

According to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), peacekeepers recorded 201 violations of Lebanese airspace by Israeli forces, including helicopters and fighter aircraft, totaling nearly 288 hours of overflight time. The mission also documented more than 2,100 firing incidents originating from Israeli positions, including from south of the Blue Line and from within UNIFIL's area of operations, according to UN spokesperson Farhan Haq.

Pakistan has long contributed troops to United Nations peacekeeping operations, including missions in Lebanon, where it has maintained a presence under UNIFIL. The ISPR noted that General Haykal's visit reflects the shared commitment of both armed forces to fostering closer military-to-military cooperation.

The meeting signals Pakistan's continued engagement with regional partners amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, as Islamabad positions itself as a key diplomatic and military ally to nations affected by the ongoing conflict.
