Pakistan condemns Israeli strikes in Lebanon, UN Chief warns of rising civilian toll

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan has strongly condemned the ongoing Israeli military strikes in Lebanon, saying the attacks have resulted in the loss of innocent lives and widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure.

In an official statement, Pakistan said the Israeli actions undermine international efforts for peace and stability in the region and constitute a “blatant violation of international law and fundamental humanitarian principles.” It urged the international community to take urgent and concrete steps to halt the escalation.

Reaffirming its position, Pakistan expressed full solidarity with the government and people of Lebanon, and reiterated its support for Lebanon’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and long-term peace and stability.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has also strongly condemned the strikes, expressing deep alarm over the rising civilian casualties. According to UN statements, the April 8 strikes reportedly killed and injured hundreds of civilians, including children, while also causing significant damage to civilian infrastructure.

Guterres “unequivocally condemned” the attacks and called for an immediate halt to hostilities, warning that continued military action risks undermining fragile ceasefire efforts in the region. He stressed that civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected at all times under international humanitarian law, and urged all parties to return to diplomatic channels.

The UN chief also linked the escalation to broader regional instability, warning that ongoing violence could threaten efforts tied to recent ceasefire understandings between Iran and the United States, and called for full adherence to UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

He extended condolences to the people of Lebanon and urged swift recovery for the injured, reiterating that there is “no military solution” to the conflict.
