Pakistan invited to join Iran-US talks to help ease tensions

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan has been invited to participate in upcoming talks between Iran and the United States aimed at reducing tensions between Tehran and Washington, the Foreign Office confirmed on Tuesday.

“Pakistan has received the invitation for the upcoming talks between Iran and the United States,” FO spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said, according to daily Dawn.

A diplomatic source noted that Islamabad’s involvement is viewed as important, as Pakistan has been quietly supporting efforts to facilitate dialogue between the two sides. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is expected to attend the meeting.

The talks are likely to be held in Türkiye on Friday, according to regional officials, with several countries - including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates - also invited.

Reports suggest Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi may meet US envoy Steve Witkoff in Istanbul to discuss a potential nuclear agreement.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said he has directed his foreign minister to pursue “fair and equitable negotiations” within the framework of national interests and in an environment free from threats. While US President Donald Trump has expressed hope for a deal, he warned that failure to reach an agreement could have serious consequences.

Araghchi, meanwhile, said Iran agrees on preventing nuclear weapons and expects sanctions relief in return, but cautioned that Tehran is prepared for conflict if diplomacy collapses. Officials say the primary goal of the talks is to open dialogue and prevent further escalation in the region.
