Pakistan to host signing of US-Iran peace agreement in Geneva, PM Sharif says

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD -  Pakistan will host the signing ceremony of a landmark agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at ending more than three months of conflict, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Monday.

Addressing Pakistan's National Assembly, Sharif said the ceremony would take place in Geneva on June 19 and described the accord as a historic achievement for peace and diplomacy.

“The signing ceremony of this historic agreement will be held on Friday, June 19, in Geneva, and by the grace of God, it will be hosted by Pakistan,” he said.

According to Sharif, the agreement establishes a framework to end the war, lift the U.S. naval blockade of Iran and reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

The conflict began in late February when the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, raising fears of a broader regional war. Pakistan subsequently emerged as a key mediator, hosting the first direct high-level talks between U.S. and Iranian officials in Islamabad in April after helping broker a fragile ceasefire.

While those initial talks ended without a breakthrough, negotiations continued through months of intensive diplomacy involving regional and international partners.

Sharif said both Washington and Tehran had now agreed to the final framework, calling it “the success of peace and dialogue” rather than a victory for any single country.

He praised the leadership of both nations for showing restraint during difficult negotiations and thanked several countries, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, China, the United Kingdom and European partners, for supporting the peace process.

The prime minister also credited Pakistan's military and civilian leadership, including Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, for their roles in sustaining the negotiations.

If signed as planned, the agreement would mark one of the most significant diplomatic breakthroughs in the Middle East in recent years and could help reduce tensions across the wider region.
