Pakistan destroys key Taliban military infrastructure in Afghanistan in fresh airstrikes

By The South Asia Times

KABUL - Pakistan’s armed forces carried out fresh strikes inside Afghanistan last night, targeting what Islamabad described as militant infrastructure used by the Afghan Taliban and allied groups involved in cross-border attacks, security sources said on Sunday.

According to Pakistani security sources, the operation hit military installations and suspected militant hideouts, including a tunnel and a technical support facility in Kandahar that authorities say stored equipment used by militants to plan attacks against Pakistani civilians.

The strikes were conducted as part of an ongoing campaign named Operation Ghazab Lil Haq, which Islamabad says will continue until its security objectives are achieved.

According to Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, the ongoing operation has inflicted heavy losses on militants described by Islamabad as “Fitna al-Khawarij,” a term used by Pakistan for terrorists linked to the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

According to figures released by the government, 663 militants have been killed and 887 wounded, while 249 posts have been destroyed or 44 captured, and 224  armored vehicles and artillery pieces eliminated since the start of the operation.

Pakistani officials also said more than 70 militant sites across Afghanistan had been targeted by airstrikes.

The latest strikes follow earlier operations on the night of March 12–13, when Pakistan said it targeted militant installations in several Afghan provinces, including Kabul, Paktia, and Kandahar.

Islamabad maintains that its forces struck only locations linked to militant activity and avoided civilian areas, rejecting allegations by Afghan authorities that the attacks caused civilian casualties.

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have risen sharply in recent months as Islamabad accuses the Afghan Taliban regime of allowing militant groups, particularly the TTP, to operate from Afghan territory and launch attacks across the border.

The Afghan Taliban deny providing support to such groups.

Violence linked to militant activity has increased in Pakistan’s western regions in recent years, particularly in the provinces bordering Afghanistan, prompting Islamabad to intensify security operations and diplomatic pressure on Kabul.

Pakistani officials say Operation Ghazab Lil Haq will continue until what they describe as terrorist infrastructure threatening Pakistan’s security is dismantled.
