North Korea Claims South Sent Surveillance Drone into Its Airspace; Seoul Denies Allegation

Seoul— North Korea on Saturday accused South Korea of sending a surveillance drone into its airspace earlier this month, calling it a “serious provocation” and warning Seoul to “pay a price” for what it described as repeated violations of sovereignty.

In a statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), a spokesperson for the General Staff of the Korean People’s Army said North Korean forces detected and electronically disabled a drone on January 4 after it allegedly crossed into airspace near Kaesong. The military claimed the drone was equipped with surveillance equipment and had recorded footage of “important targets” before crashing.

The statement alleged the drone had taken off from South Korea’s Ganghwa area and conducted reconnaissance over several North Korean regions. Pyongyang also cited a similar incident in September last year, accusing Seoul of repeated aerial intrusions.

South Korea rejected the claims. In response to an inquiry by Yonhap News Agency, Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back said the allegation was “absolutely not true,” adding that the drones shown in images released by the North were not models operated by the South Korean military. The defense ministry said President Lee Jae Myung had ordered a thorough investigation and that relevant agencies were verifying the incident.

Military experts cited by South Korean media said the drone described by North Korea appeared to be made of inexpensive components and did not resemble equipment used by the South Korean armed forces.

The exchange adds to heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, where both sides have accused each other of provocative actions near the border in recent months.
